Zerodha, the Bootstrap Champ Award Winner 2016


BENGALURU: A pat on the back always boosts a person’s morale and pushes him high to achieve more; be it any sector. On such path is Economic Times identifying and appreciating Startups in all the sectors. Recently, ET has announced the winners of ‘ET Startup Awards 2016’. One among the winners is Zerodha, the winner of Bootstrap Champ Award that has been successfully growing in the trading and investment market since 20 years. The firm is an online discount brokerage and offers services such as equity investment, currency and commodity trading, and retail and institutional broking.

Zerodha works on the strategy of making a hassle-free financial trading and has constructed a large customer-base of around 1,20,000 customers. It has also been grabbing a revenue of Rs 10,000 Crore a day. The company has been identified to have made a profit of Rs 65 Crore on revenue of about Rs 119 Crore in the financial year 2015–16.The efforts of the company have been rewarded with BSE/D&B 'Emerging brokerage' award in 2014 and 2015.

Along with the equity investment, the company also hosts 3 learning platforms—‘Zerodha Varsity’ a stock market education platform; ‘Z-Connect’ a financial blog; and ‘Trading Q&A’ that provides answers on trading from investors and traders. Nithin Kamath, the founder of Zerodha has also set up Rainmatter, an in-house incubator for financial technology startups, where innovative financial technology players are supported. Recently, Rainmatter launched Smallcase, a thematic investment platform.

"We are about to get an NBFC (non-banking financial company) licence and will enter the lending space, specifically aiming to lend to retail individuals. A lot of our clients hold stocks with us so if they want to raise some money on that stock, we would be the easiest people to do that," says Kamath.

Other Contenders for the Bootstrap Award

There are several other companies who gave strong competition for Zerodha, but then could not beat it. One among them is Inquirly Technologies, the digital marketing and the customer engagement company. InfoSoft Global was founded by a 16-years old guy, Pallav Nadhani, as a venture to make money, which has now grown large to name Google, Apple and Facebook as its clients. Other companies include Indusface, and Wingify Software to name some.
