Twitter Gulps Security Startup Whisper Systems

Fremont: Whisper Systems, the U.S.-based security start-up,  along with its two member team, has been acquired by Twitter. Whisper Systems focuses on Android security for enterprises customers. Previously, the company was engaged in creating a way for people to use Google and other systems without being tracked. The financial terms of the deal is not been disclosed by either of the parties.

Whisper Systems was founded last year by Moxie Marlinspike and Stuart Anderson. The company is well known for its RedPhone service, which creates encrypted phone calls so that no one can listen into the users’ conversation, and TextSecure, a service that also encrypts the users’ text message. The company provides security and management solutions that transform consumer phones and tablets into enterprise-ready devices.

With acquisition of Whisper Systems, Twitter has gained technology to bolster security of its fast-growing microblogging service. Since none of the products of Whisper Systems is out of the beta phase, it is likely Twitter was more attracted to the talent in this particular acquisition. But the acquisition will result in a temporarily taking their products and services offline. RedPhone service will be interrupted immediately, but FlashBack users get a month to pull of any backup data they would like before the service goes offline.
