Fremont: The natural knack to be flexible and adjusting, have made women better leaders than men. Women are conditioned to multi-task--they handle their personal and professional lives with ease and calm. Out of the Fortune 500 companies, just 13 are led by women. Dr. Alice Eagly, a top scholar on gender and leadership states that women are more likely than men to possess the leadership qualities associated with success. Why do men lag behind in the leadership qualities, even though majority of the top positions in companies are held by men?
Men are known to be tougher in their outlook as compared to women, which makes them resist change. Women, on the other hand are conditioned to be more receptive to changes, which makes them adjust to any situation. Women are ready to listen to their superiors and execute it after putting in their own view points, but when it comes to men, they tend to be more stubborn to deviate from their ideologies.
Men are less empathetic than women, which makes them a bad choice for positions which directly deal with customer or employee woes. Women on the other hand have been noticed to be better listeners, who would try to measure the pros and cons of a topic to find out a reasonable solution. Women try to identify the nonverbal cues, which makes them express things better by using more of animation or gestures in their communication. This helps them to get their point across to the other person in a better manner. Thus, many of the companies are now hiring women as HR executives, since they try to strike an emotional bond with the other person.
Men have since ages been depicted as being dominating, who try to boss around others in order to get their work done. With the change in times, it has been found that employees don't react well to a dominating boss--the boss should be firm, but not try to interfere in each and every task. Women on the other hand try to get along with their co-fellows; they try to bring a new angle to situations, which make them get their job done easily.
Female leaders tend to interact more until the emotional content has been played, while men have been found to shy away at the mere mention of emotions. Men try to immediately search for solutions, rather than fully understanding the person, which might lead them to formulate weak strategies. According to a survey by Pew Research Center, women have the traits to be great leaders, and score above their male counterparts on seven of the eight leadership traits, which include honesty, intelligence, hard work, compassion, outgoing nature, and creativity.
These stereotypes about male leaders have put them at a disadvantage when it comes to the behavior expected by the employees. The easy going and receptive nature of women are what are making them climb the corporate ladder and make a mark for themselves; while, men with their adamant and tough image are viewed as bosses, rather than leaders.
