TATA IPL 2024: Virat Kohli Becomes First Indian to Cross 12,000 T20 Runs
Virat Kohli made history as the first Indian batsman to achieve 12,000 career runs in T20 cricket, achieving this milestone while representing Royal Challengers Bengaluru against Chennai Super Kings in the inaugural match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) at the M.A Chidambaram Stadium. Kohli joins an elite group as the sixth batsman globally to reach this feat, encompassing runs scored in both T20 Internationals and franchise cricket. Topping the charts is the renowned West Indian cricketer, Chris Gayle, with an impressive tally of 14,562 runs amassed across various leagues worldwide during his career from 2005 to 2022.
Shoaib Malik of Pakistan secures the second position with 13,360 runs, while Kieron Pollard from the West Indies closely trails behind in third place with 12,900 runs. England's Alex Hales occupies the fourth spot with 12,3190 runs, and David Warner, set to debut for Delhi Capitals in the upcoming IPL 2024 match on Saturday, holds the fifth position with 12,065 runs.
Scoring 21 runs from 20 deliveries against CSK, Kohli's overall tally now stands at 12,015 runs. Initially pacing himself, Kohli, alongside skipper Faf du Plessis, propelled the score to 41 before RCB encountered their first dismissal. Faf, who hammered eight boundaries during his quickfire 35 off 23 balls, was brilliantly caught by Rachin Ravindra off the bowling of Mustafizur Rahman.
Kohli's initial boundary attempt came on the 14th delivery he faced in the tenth over. Seizing a half-tracker from the mystery spinner Maheesh Theekshana, he dispatched it over midwicket for a six. However, RCB suffered setbacks with the quick dismissals of Rajat Patidar, Glenn Maxwell, and Kohli himself, leading to a slump in their score to 77/4 by the 12th over.
