TATA IPL 2024: Suryakumar Yadav to miss MI opener against GT due to NCA Clearance
Mumbai Indians' star batsman Suryakumar Yadav has reportedly not passed a fitness evaluation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), extending his absence for at least three matches. Yadav has been sidelined since December due to an ankle injury sustained during a T20 match against South Africa. Following the injury, he underwent sports hernia surgery in Germany and has been undergoing rehabilitation at the NCA in Bengaluru.
After undergoing a fitness assessment, the doctors and physiotherapists at the NCA opted to delay issuing clearance, indicating that Yadav will miss the Mumbai Indians' opening match against the Gujarat Titans on March 24 in the upcoming Indian Premier League, which begins on March 22. Yadav, a crucial player for the five-time champions Mumbai Indians, will remain sidelined for the time being.
Suryakumar Yadav is set to undergo his next fitness evaluation on March 21, and should he not pass, his availability for Mumbai Indians' following matches against Sunrisers Hyderabad on March 27 and Rajasthan Royals on April 1 would be uncertain. Yadav, the Mumbai Indians' batsman, expressed this news with a heartbreak emoticon on social media.
Previously, during a media briefing, Mumbai Indians' head coach Mark Boucher mentioned that they were anticipating an update from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) regarding Yadav's fitness status. "We are awaiting updates on Suryakumar from the BCCI. We have always been under a cloud of fitness issues but we have a world-class medical team. We may lose one or two in terms of fitness, but we have to move on as is sport", Boucher said.
So far in his IPL career, Suryakumar Yadav has accumulated 3249 runs across 124 innings while representing the Mumbai Indians. Additionally, he has showcased exceptional performance in the shortest format while representing India, swiftly ascending to the top of the world rankings in T20s.
