TATA IPL 2024: RR beat DC by 12 runs; Chahal and Burger take 2 wickets each
Yuzvendra Chahal and Nandre Burger each claimed two wickets, while Sandeep Sharma and Avesh Khan showcased exceptional death bowling as Rajasthan Royals secured a 12-run victory over Delhi Capitals. This win maintains the pattern of home teams prevailing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, held at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium.
Following Riyan Parag's electrifying unbeaten knock of 84 runs from just 45 balls, which captivated the home crowd and propelled RR to a competitive total of 185/5, captain Sanju Samson demonstrated impeccable judgment with his bowling changes. The bowlers delivered admirably, particularly in the crucial death overs, containing DC to a total of 173/5.
Chasing 186, Mitchell Marsh thumped five boundaries before being castled through the gate by a 146kph delivery from Burger in the fourth over. After Ricky Bhui survived a lbw call, Burger bounced out the batter with a fiery bouncer which got big on him and lobbed off the front glove to give wicketkeeper Sanju Samson an easy catch.
David Warner unleashed his attacking prowess by executing scoops and lofted shots against Trent Boult, dispatching him for two consecutive sixes. He followed up with a four and another six off Burger as DC reached 59/2 at the end of the Power-play. Warner maintained his aggressive approach, accumulating boundaries through drives and pulls while also narrowly surviving a run-out opportunity in the ninth over.
From the other end, Rishabh Pant took his time to get going but used his hands well to steer and cut for two boundaries before a slog-sweep against Chahal was palmed over by deep mid-wicket to give him his first six post return to the competitive game. The 67-run partnership off 46 balls for the third wicket ended when Warner flashed hard at an Avesh delivery and Sandeep, at short third man, moved to his right to complete a brilliant catch.
Attempting to lower the required run rate, Pant aimed to cut a wide delivery from Chahal but ended up edging it behind to Samson. Following Pant's dismissal, Impact Player Abishek Porel was the next to depart, getting caught at long-off to become Chahal's second victim. Tristan Stubbs, who had previously struck a four off Sandeep, had a stroke of luck when he was dropped by Boult at deep mid-wicket off Ashwin's bowling. Adding insult to injury, Stubbs then executed clean pulls and lofted shots against the off-spinner, hitting two consecutive sixes to keep DC in contention.
Following Axar Patel's boundary off Avesh, Stubbs hammered a six and a four off Sandeep, who regained his accuracy later in the over. This reduced the equation to 17 runs needed off the final over for victory. However, Avesh remained composed and conceded only four runs in the last over, securing RR's second consecutive win in the competition.
