TATA IPL 2024: Rishabh Pant named Delhi Capitals Captain for Season
Rishabh Pant's appointment as captain of the Delhi Capitals for the upcoming IPL season signifies a remarkable chapter in his incredible return to the sport. After enduring a harrowing car accident in December 2022, he took a hiatus from cricket for 14 months. "We are delighted to welcome Rishabh back as our captain. Grit and fearlessness have always dictated his brand of cricket and not surprisingly, even his road to recovery", said DC chairman and co-owner Parth Jindal in a media release.
"I can't wait to see him walk our team out once again as we look forward to a new season with renewed passion, vigour and enthusiasm", added DC chairman Parth Jindal. The southpaw has participated in the Capitals' pre-season training camp in Visakhapatnam as they gear up for their opening IPL 2024 fixture against the Punjab Kings in Chandigarh on March 23rd.
The IPL commences on March 22nd. Previously, Pant received approval from the BCCI to participate in this year's IPL as a wicketkeeper-batsman. "After undergoing an extensive 14-month rehab and recovery process, following a life-threatening road mishap on December 30, 2022, near Roorkee, Uttarakhand, Rishabh Pant has now been declared fit as a wicket-keeper batter for the upcoming IPL 2024", the board had stated in a medical update.
Delhi's head coach, Ricky Ponting, also expressed approval for Pant's performance during the team's training camp, observing his performance positively during net sessions. "We missed him incredibly last year. The whole tournament missed him. Rishabh brings so much energy to the team. He's got that smile on his face, he's hitting the ball as good as ever and he tends to lift all of his teammates around him", said Ponting. The previous season saw Australian veteran David Warner leading the Capitals, who concluded the league in ninth place out of ten teams with five wins and nine losses, finishing ahead of Sunrisers Hyderabad.
