TATA IPL 2024: CSK names Ruturaj Gaikwad captain after M.S. Dhoni
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have entrusted the captaincy mantle to Ruturaj Gaikwad, succeeding the legendary M.S. Dhoni, a decision of immense significance for both the team and Gaikwad himself. Gaikwad, hailing from Maharashtra, was acquired by CSK in the IPL 2019 auction and has consistently proven his worth with the bat since then. He was groomed as a prospect during the IPL 2020 season, showcasing his abilities as a dependable opener capable of aggressive play when needed. His debut IPL season saw him amass 204 runs in six matches at an impressive average of 51.00.
Gaikwad's breakthrough came in the 2021 season where he emerged as a standout performer, scoring a remarkable 635 runs and earning the prestigious Orange Cap for the highest run-scorer in the tournament. Notably, he surpassed Murali Vijay's record for most runs in a season by a CSK opener and became the youngest CSK player to score a century in the IPL, achieving this milestone at the age of 25.
His contributions were pivotal in CSK's success, including a crucial knock of 70 in the qualifier and a significant partnership with Faf du Plessis in the final. Gaikwad's cricketing journey began in Pune, where he honed his skills at the Varroc Dilip Vengsarkar Academy before making his mark in domestic cricket for Maharashtra.
Outside the IPL, Gaikwad's talent attracted attention in the Maharashtra Premier League (MPL), where he was signed by the Pune-based franchise Puneri Bappa for a substantial amount, and also being appointed as their captain. Despite his achievements, Gaikwad remains grounded, now returning to CSK after being acquired in the 2024 IPL auction for Rs 6.00 crore. As he steps into the shoes of Dhoni, Gaikwad faces immense scrutiny but also holds the promise of continuing the legacy of success for CSK.
