Smriti Mandhana Smashes Record with Fastest ODI Century
Indian skipper Smriti Mandhana made history by scoring the fastest One-Day International (ODI) century by an Indian woman, reaching the milestone in just 70 balls during the third ODI against Ireland on Wednesday. Leading the team in the absence of regular captain Harmanpreet Kaur, Mandhana delivered a breathtaking knock of 135 runs, featuring 12 boundaries and seven sixes. Her explosive innings ended when she was caught at short fine leg by Orla Prendergast.
Mandhana broke the record set by Harmanpreet Kaur, who had made a century against South Africa in Bengaluru last year in 87 balls. Her innings now is the joint-seventh fastest century in women's ODIs, equalling the feat of former England cricketer Charlotte Edwards from 2012.
She became the 10th woman to score her hundredth ODI, also equaling Tammy Beaumont of England for the third position in the list of most centuries scored by a woman in ODIs. The list is headed by former Australian captain Meg Lanning, who has scored 15 centuries, followed by New Zealand's Suzie Bates with 13.
Mandhana's record-breaking performance marks an ever-growing stature as one of the best batters in women's cricket, further consolidating her influence on the international circuit.
