Mumbai Indians continued their remarkable turnaround in the IPL 2025 with a dominant seven-wicket win over Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Wednesday, powered by a vintage innings from Rohit Sharma.
Rohit, rediscovering his sublime form, struck a fluent 70 off just 46 balls, peppered with eight fours and three sixes, to lead the successful chase of 144. Mumbai reached the target with ease, finishing on 146-3 in just 15.4 overs, securing their fourth straight victory after a slow start to the season.
After winning the toss and opting to bowl first, Mumbai's bowlers set the tone early. Sunrisers were reduced to a dismal 35-5 in the first nine overs, thanks to a lethal opening spell from Trent Boult (4-26) and Deepak Chahar (2-12). Travis Head fell for a duck, slicing Boult to deep cover, while Abhishek Sharma and Nitish Reddy also fell cheaply.
Heinrich Klaasen emerged as the lone warrior for the hosts, producing a superb 66 off 44 balls (9x4, 2x6) to stage a partial recovery. He shared a vital 99-run stand for the sixth wicket with Abhinav Manohar, who scored a steady 43 off 37 balls with two fours and three sixes. Their partnership lifted Sunrisers to a modest 143-8, a total that never looked enough.
Mumbai’s chase was brisk and confident. Will Jacks added quickfire momentum with a 22 off 12 before Rohit took control. Suryakumar Yadav finished the job in style with an unbeaten 40 from just 19 balls, hitting five boundaries and two sixes to seal the win.
The victory propels Mumbai Indians to third on the points table, a dramatic rise after losing their first three games. In contrast, Sunrisers Hyderabad are now on the brink of elimination, languishing at the bottom with just two wins in eight matches.
As MI's campaign gains momentum, questions will mount for the struggling Sunrisers, whose hopes of playoff qualification now hang by a thread.
