Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his heartfelt congratulations to Nishad Kumar for clinching the silver medal in the men's high jump T47 event at the Paris Paralympics. Nishad's remarkable leap of 2.04 meters earned him the silver, marking his best performance of the season.
In a tweet on his official X handle, PM Modi praised Nishad for his extraordinary achievement. “Congrats to @nishad_hj for his remarkable achievement in winning a Silver medal in the Men's High Jump T47 event at the #Paralympics2024! He has shown us all that with passion and determination, everything is possible. India is elated”, PM Modi wrote.
Nishad Kumar’s silver medal adds to his impressive track record, having previously secured a second-place finish in Tokyo three years ago. His success underscores the significant strides Indian athletes are making on the global stage.
The ongoing Paris Paralympics has seen India secure a total of seven medals so far, including one gold, two silvers, and four bronze. The nation's Paralympic contingent has been performing admirably, with several standout performances across various sports.
On Sunday, Preeti Pal created history by winning a bronze medal in the 200m T-35 race. She is now the first-ever Indian woman athlete to secure two medals in track and field events at the Paralympics or Olympics. Additionally, Rubina earned a bronze medal in the P2-Women's 10M Air Pistol SH-1 final, with a total score of 211.1 points. Javanmardi Sareh of Iran won gold with 236.8 points, while Turkey's Ozgan Aysel took silver with 231.1 points.
In shooting, AvLekhara continued her winning streak by claiming gold in the women's 10m air rifle final. Mona Agarwal also contributed to India's medal haul with a bronze in the same event. Earlier, Manish Narwal secured India’s first silver at the Paris Paralympics in the men’s P1 10m air pistol SH1 competition.
This year’s Paralympic Games mark India’s largest contingent ever, with 84 athletes competing across 12 sports. The country’s increased participation reflects the growing prominence of para-sports in India. The ongoing Paralympics in Paris are an opportunity for India to build on its historic achievements from Tokyo 2020, where the nation won a total of 19 medals, including five golds, eight silvers, and six bronzes.
