Mumbai Indians Clinch Four-Wicket Win Over Sunrisers Hyderabad in Low-Scoring Thriller
A clinical performance from Mumbai Indians (MI), spearheaded by their bowling unit and a string of solid contributions with the bat, saw them secure a four-wicket victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Match 33 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. Played on a pitch that offered plenty to bowlers one that saw MI bowl out Kolkata Knight Riders for just 116 a few days earlier Thursday’s clash turned into another low-scoring encounter where discipline and composure proved decisive.
After electing to bowl first, MI restricted SRH to a modest 162/5 in their 20 overs, thanks to a disciplined effort led by ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah and skipper Hardik Pandya. Despite not taking a flurry of wickets, MI kept the run rate in check with tight bowling throughout. Bumrah was once again the star with the ball, conceding minimal runs and keeping Hyderabad's aggressive batters at bay.
The chase, while never out of control, wasn’t without its tense moments. MI reached 166/6 in 18.1 overs, winning with 11 balls to spare but missing out on a more dominant finish due to a late hiccup. Captain Hardik Pandya, who came in late in the innings, perished trying to finish in style with two runs remaining, only to fall to an unnecessary big shot.
Rohit Sharma, who was brought in as an Impact Substitute, gave the chase early momentum. The former MI skipper smacked two sixes off Mohammed Shami in the second over and added another off Pat Cummins, raising hopes of a classic Rohit knock. But his innings was cut short at 26 after falling to a low full-toss from Cummins, who had the final say in their mini battle.
Ryan Rickelton (31 off 23) and Will Jacks (36 off 26) then steadied the innings, albeit with a bit of fortune. Rickelton survived a no-ball scare after being caught, while Jacks was dropped by Travis Head. The duo ensured MI crossed the halfway mark without further damage. Rickelton hit three consecutive boundaries off Ehsan Malinga before eventually falling to Harshal Patel.
Jacks and Suryakumar Yadav added a crucial 52-run stand for the third wicket. Suryakumar played a typical explosive cameo of 26 off 15, launching two sixes and two boundaries before being dismissed by Cummins. Zeeshan Ansari had a mixed day in the field, dropping Jacks earlier but later taking his catch and then dismissing Tim David cheaply.
Tilak Varma held his nerve at the end with an unbeaten 21, guiding MI to their third win of the season. With this result, Mumbai climbed to seventh on the points table with six points, breaking away from the mid-table clutter. SRH, on the other hand, remain on four points and continue to struggle for consistency.
With their bowlers finding rhythm and the batting unit showing promise, Mumbai Indians will look to build on this momentum in the second half of the season.
