As the thrilling Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy edges towards a dramatic conclusion, India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel has expressed strong belief that the team can still snatch an improbable victory on the final day of the fifth Test at The Oval. With England needing just 35 runs and India requiring four wickets, Monday promises a gripping finish to a fiercely contested five-match series.
India mounted a spirited fightback late on Day 4, sparked by pacer Prasidh Krishna who claimed two crucial wickets in quick succession after Harry Brook and Joe Root both notched stellar centuries to put England within touching distance of victory. Morkel lauded the resilience of his side and stressed the importance of staying mentally strong in such critical moments.
“You can't really afford to throw in the towel in a very important Test match”, Morkel said at the post-day press conference. “It was key for us to break that partnership and get a new batter in. We’ve seen it happen so many times one breakthrough can lead to two, and suddenly pressure builds”.
Morkel highlighted the team’s determination and tactical discipline, urging the bowlers to remain calm and focused. “Tomorrow is about doing a good warm-up, getting the boys ready and landing the ball in the right areas. If we can get it right early, we can create excitement again”, he added.
A major part of India’s hopes hinges on fast bowler Mohammed Siraj, the leading wicket-taker of the series with 20 scalps. Morkel showered praise on Siraj for his consistency, leadership and impact throughout the series.
“I’m very happy for Siraj. He’s someone in the dressing room who always leads the way”, said Morkel. “He might not speak much vocally, but he’s a natural leader through his actions. Whether it’s bowling an extra two or three overs or stepping up in key situations, he’s been that guy for us”.
Siraj once again stood tall in the final session on Day 4, lifting the team during a tense period and giving them a glimmer of hope heading into the final day. “It’s those smart plays, those crucial spells, that make the difference. For me, Siraj has just been outstanding”, Morkel added.
With the series hanging in the balance at 2-1 in England’s favor, India’s bowlers have one final opportunity to script a historic comeback. As the sun rises over The Oval, both teams will arrive knowing only one can walk away victorious in what has been a riveting Test series.
