Meet Dipa Karmakar, the First Indian Women Gymnast to Qualify For Olympics



BENGALURU: Dipa Karmakar made history by emerging as the first Indian woman acrobat to be eligible for the 2016 Olympic Games to be held in August.  She scored 52.698 points with her skilled performance at the qualifying round and went ahead to lock a position at the Olympics Games reports, The Times of India.

Dipa Karmakar makes India proud by not only being the first Indian woman gymnast but also the foremost to make the grade for quadrennial extravaganza after 52 years. She has been confirmed as the 79th gymnast among individual qualifiers in the rundown of women’s creative athlete who have now secured a berth for the Rio Olympics. Dipa’s first vault, Produnova made her score 15.066, the most elevated among the 14 contenders. However, she was not able to give a satisfactory performance in the uneven bars exercise which brought her points down as she could attain only 11.700points.

The qualifiers got Dipa about 13.366 and 12.566 points for her beam and floor exercises that shortlisted her in the Olympics. Previously, she was put as second hold for the succeeding Olympic Test occasion in Rio but it was informed last month that she had made it to the list of finalists. Dipa has also earned a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games that was held in Glasgow, 2014. She may have just missed her share of magnificence in the Asian Games held at Incheon, South Korea a year ago, but her bronze this time, makes her scale to a more outstanding stature.
