Jay Shah to Be Felicitated by BCCI at SGM in Mumbai
Jay Shah, the newly appointed chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC), is set to attend the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) Special General Meeting (SGM) in Mumbai on Sunday as a 'special invitee'.
The SGM has been convened to elect the new secretary and treasurer of the BCCI. Devajit Saikia from Assam is expected to take over as secretary, while Prabhtej Singh from the Chhattisgarh State Cricket Association is set to assume the role of treasurer, both unopposed. This comes following the resignation of Ashish Shelar, who vacated his position as treasurer after being inducted into the Maharashtra cabinet as a minister. Saikia, who was appointed interim secretary by BCCI president Roger Binny using special constitutional powers, will formally take charge at the meeting.
Jay Shah’s presence as ICC chairman is seen as a significant moment for the BCCI. Sources indicate that Shah's attendance aligns with a precedent set by former ICC chairman N. Srinivasan, who attended BCCI meetings during his tenure in 2014-2015. Despite ICC rules barring formal ties between its chairperson and member associations, the BCCI’s constitution does not impose such restrictions, enabling Shah to participate. The BCCI is expected to felicitate Shah during the meeting to honor his elevation to the ICC chairmanship.
The SGM is also likely to address other key issues, including a petition challenging the tenure of BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla. The petition alleges that Shukla’s tenure exceeds the Supreme Court-mandated nine-year limit. Additionally, the meeting might touch upon Team India’s recent performance in Australia, though formal discussions with the support staff or selection committee remain uncertain.
Notably, the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), represented by president Snehasish Ganguly, will participate without voting rights due to a missed deadline for name submission.
