Pooran, aged 29, made headlines earlier this week when he officially stepped away from international duties, citing 'much thought and reflection' without disclosing detailed reasons for his decision. Despite the abrupt retirement, he remains at the peak of his powers and continues to be a dominant force in franchise cricket worldwide.
MI New York, the reigning MLC champions and a franchise owned by Reliance Industries also the proprietors of IPL giants Mumbai Indians welcomed Pooran's appointment with enthusiasm. “There’s a new commander in town captain Nicholas Pooran”, the franchise announced on X, calling him one of the most feared left-handed wicketkeeper-batters in world cricket today.
Pooran had a stellar MLC season in 2023, where he topped the run charts with 388 runs, including a blistering 137* in the final that secured the title for MI New York. The franchise expressed confidence in his leadership to deliver continued success, especially with other international stars like Quinton de Kock, Kieron Pollard, and Rashid Khan in the squad.
A standout in T20 cricket, Pooran retires as West Indies' most capped T20I player with 106 appearances and their highest run-scorer in the format with 2275 runs at a strike rate of 136.39. He also scored 1983 runs in 61 ODIs at an average of 39.66 but never donned the whites for Test cricket.
His IPL 2025 season was equally remarkable, finishing with 524 runs at a staggering strike rate of 196.25, including five half-centuries and a record 170 sixes in a calendar year.
As the third MLC season kicks off Thursday, all eyes will be on Pooran’s captaincy as he leads MI New York’s title defense.
