TATA IPL 2024: Kohli Tops as Orange Cap Scorer, Parag Outscores Head in RR vs RCB
Virat Kohli concluded the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) season as the top run-scorer, while Faf du Plessis' Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) saw their playoff hopes dashed by former champions Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the Eliminator. The Orange Cap recipient reached the milestone of 8,000 runs in the lucrative league after RR captain Sanju Samson won the toss and elected to field first at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
At a strike rate of 137.50, Kohli hammered 33 runs off 24 deliveries against RR in the Eliminator. The seasoned batsman fell prey to spinner Yuzvendra Chahal in the seventh over, wrapping up the season with 741 runs for the RCB. With an impressive average of 61.75, Kohli stands as the sole player to breach the 700-run mark this season. In his last match of the 2024 edition, Kohli maintained his position atop the Orange Cap standings.
Kohli leads the pack, trailed by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, who has amassed 583 runs in 14 matches. Rising Rajasthan Royals (RR) sensation Riyan Parag ascended to the third position with his pivotal innings in the IPL 2024 playoffs against RCB, accumulating 567 runs in 15 appearances. Parag has overtaken Travis Head, who registered 533 runs in 13 games. RR skipper Sanju Samson occupies the sixth spot in the Orange Cap rankings, tallying 521 runs across 15 matches.
Samson's Rajasthan Royals will face Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Qualifier 2. The winner will play Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the final. “What cricket and life has taught us is we will have some good and some really bad phases. But we need to have the character to bounce back. Really happy with the way we fielded, batted and bowled today. Credit to the bowlers, they are always looking at what the opposition batters would do and what fields to set. Credit goes to Sanga and bowling coach Shane Bond as well. They've spent a lot of time in hotel rooms discussing these things”, Samson said after the match.
