Rohit Sharma Makes History with 20th Player of the Match Award in IPL 2025
Indian skipper Rohit Sharma has made history by becoming the first Indian cricketer to achieve the feat of winning 20 Player of the Match (POTM) awards in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The feat was achieved on Sunday, April 20, when Rohit was given the POTM award for his brilliant 76-run knock against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) during the 38th league game of IPL 2025 at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.
Rohit's match-winning innings, featuring four boundaries and six sixes, took Mumbai Indians (MI) to a dominant position in their 177-run pursuit. His contribution helped MI win a crucial game, their first against CSK since the 2022 season. Rohit's 76 runs, along with Suryakumar Yadav's scorching 68 not out off 30 balls, took MI to an easy victory. This victory also took MI to sixth position in the IPL 2025 points table.
The 20th POTM award takes Rohit past Virat Kohli, who has 19 awards, on the list of players with the most POTM awards in IPL history. Yet, the overall record remains with former South African sensation AB de Villiers, who received 25 POTM awards during his IPL career, followed by Chris Gayle, who has 22.
Rohit's consistent excellence in the IPL is also brought out by his recent feat of becoming the second-highest run-getter in the history of the tournament. With 6,786 runs in 264 IPL games, Rohit overtook Shikhar Dhawan's total of 6,769 runs. The record is still held by Virat Kohli, who has scored 8,326 runs in the IPL.
Rohit's brilliant knock against CSK not only ensured the much-needed win for MI but also contributed another milestone to his glorious IPL career. His year after year consistent performances have established him as one of the most successful IPL players in history.
As Mumbai Indians proceed with their journey in IPL 2025, Rohit's leadership and batting skills will continue to be key to their efforts towards another title.
