Gujarat Titans (GT) began their IPL 2025 campaign with a commanding 36-run victory over Mumbai Indians (MI) at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium on March 29.
Batting first on a tricky black-soil pitch, GT posted a competitive 196/8. Openers Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan provided a fiery start, smashing 66 runs in the powerplay, both scoring 32 off 18 balls. Sudharsan continued his fine form, reaching a 50 off 33 balls. However, GT lost momentum in the final overs, slipping from 170/3 to 196/8 as Sudharsan was trapped lbw, Rahul Tewatia was run out, and Sherfane Rutherford fell cheaply.
Mumbai’s chase got off to a shaky start. Mohammed Siraj struck early, bowling Rohit Sharma for 8 before dismissing Ryan Rickelton (6). MI stumbled to 48/2 in the powerplay. Suryakumar Yadav tried to revive the innings with a brisk 41 off 27 balls, launching big sixes off Siraj and Sai Kishore, but lacked support. Tilak Varma struggled to accelerate, and MI's middle order faltered under pressure.
Hardik Pandya’s return to MI couldn’t prevent yet another slow start to their campaign, while GT made a strong statement, showcasing their depth and determination in their season opener.
