IPL Auction 2025 provided teams with a scintillating Day 1 as no expense was spared for star talent and new auction records were created. Amongst uncapped players Rasikh Salam Dar was the prized catch as Royal Challengers Bangalore bagged the pacer for Rs 6 crores, a humongous leap from his base price of Rs 30 lakhs. Nehal Wadhera and Abdul Samad also caught attention, fetching Rs 4.20 crore each. Punjab Kings and Lucknow Super Giants won the two bids. Mumbai Indians arrived in the auction a bit late but did make a thundering debut by signing New Zealand's Trent Boult for Rs 12.50 crore.
This was matched by both Jofra Archer and Josh Hazlewood. Lucknow Super Giants went on to make history by signing Rishabh Pant for a whopping amount of Rs 27 crore, the biggest in IPL history. This led to making Punjab Kings' Rs 26.75 crore bid on Shreyas Iyer take up the top spot for some time as it also broke Mitchell Starc's Rs 24.75 crore record from last year. Venkatesh Iyer, an all-rounder, became a marquee name as Kolkata Knight Riders paid Rs 23.75 crore to win back the India star. Gujarat Titans consolidated their ranks by spending Rs 15.75 crore on Jos Buttler and Rs 10.75 crore on Kagiso Rabada. Of the Indian bowlers, Yuzvendra Chahal fetched Rs 18 crore from Punjab Kings, Mohammed Siraj Rs 12.25 crore from Gujarat Titans, and Mohammed Shami found a home with Sunrisers Hyderabad for Rs 10 crore.
While marquee players were at the center of all the bidding wars, there were a few surprises too. Star players such as David Warner and Devdutt Padikkal did not sell, while Mitchell Starc, who touched a sky-high last year, was picked by Delhi Capitals at Rs 11.75 crores. Ravichandran Ashwin is going to be a part of Chennai Super Kings for Rs 9.75 crores. Marcus Stoinis fetched Rs 11 crore from Punjab Kings.
Day 1 ended with 84 players sold as franchises focused on building strong squads for IPL 2025. The action resumes on Day 2, with accelerated rounds, promising more surprises and strategic moves as teams finalize their rosters from a pool of 574 players.
