Indian Boxer Nishant Dev Triumphs in Thrilling Opener at 1st World Olympic Qualifier
In a thrilling start to the 1st World Olympic Boxing Qualifier, Indian pugilist Nishant Dev showcased his prowess in the men's 71kg category by securing an electrifying 3-1 victory over British boxer Lewis Richardson. The World Championships bronze medallist didn't waste any time asserting his dominance, launching an aggressive assault from the outset and clinching the first round 4-1. Capitalizing on his long reach, Nishant further tightened his grip on the bout, comfortably winning the second round 5-0 with effective right hooks.
Maintaining composure in the third round, Nishant adeptly fended off his opponent's attacks, securing a split decision to emerge victorious. However, the journey was not as smooth for six-time Asian Championships medallist Shiva Thapa (63.5kg), who faced a formidable challenge against Uzbekistan's Ruslan Abdullaev, the reigning World Champion. Despite Shiva's defensive efforts, Abdullaev's pinpoint punches forced the referee to halt the contest in the first round.
The national champion Lakshya Chahar (80kg) also bowed out of the competition after a closely contested match against Iran's Gheshlaghi Meysam. Despite a strong comeback in the second round, Lakshya succumbed to a knockout just 20 seconds before the final bell. Commonwealth Games 2022 bronze medallist Jaismine (60kg) faced a similar fate, exiting the competition with a 0-5 loss against Japan's Ayaka Taguchi.
Looking ahead, youth world champion Ankushita Boro (66kg) is set to take on Sonvico Emilie of France, while national champion Sanjeet (92kg) will square off against Aibek Oralbay of Kazakhstan later in the night. The ongoing World Olympic boxing qualification tournament, hosting over 590 boxers, aims to allocate a total of 49 quotas for the 2024 Paris Olympics, including 28 for men and 21 for women. India has already secured four quotas, with Nikhat Zareen (50kg), Preeti (54kg), Parveen Hooda (57kg), and Lovlina Borgohain (75kg) confirming their berths through stellar performances at the Asian Games. The quest for more Olympic berths continues as the tournament unfolds, with the second World Qualification Tournament scheduled in Bangkok from May 23 to June 3.
