Gukesh Wins Candidates, Qualifies for World Championship Match Against Ding Liren
D. Gukesh, the 17-year-old chess prodigy, made history by becoming the youngest-ever player to win the FIDE Candidates Tournament. In a thrilling final round game against Hikaru Nakamura that ended in a draw, Gukesh secured his victory with an impressive score of 9/14 points. He is only the second Indian player after the legendary Vishwanathan Anand to win the prestigious tournament.
With this triumph, Gukesh earns the right to challenge reigning World Chess Champion Ding Liren of China in the World Chess Championship match. This milestone marks a significant achievement in Gukesh's young career and places him as the second Indian after Anand to compete for the Classical World Championship title.
Anand, a five-time world champion, congratulated Gukesh on his remarkable performance and praised him for his resilience and strategic acumen. The upcoming World Championship Match will consist of 14 games, with the first player to score 7.5 points declared the winner. In case of a tie after 14 games, the match will proceed to a tiebreaker.
In other matches of the day, Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa secured a victory against Nijat Abasov, while Vidit Gujrathi played a draw against Alireza Firouzja. In the women's section, Vaishali Rameshbabu triumphed over Kateryna Lagno, marking her fifth consecutive win after facing four losses. Humpy Koneru also celebrated a win against Lei Tingjie.
