The choice of Mr. Trump’s VP candidate will shape this election. Will he pick someone who will solidify his base like a Sarah Palin? Will he pick someone that will draw in Bernie’s supporters like the anti-trade Pat Buchanan? Will he pick someone who can bring him closer to the GOP like a Marco Rubio? Will he pick someone to burnish his credentials as someone who can govern by picking a governor such as Chris Christie. Or will he be Trump and pick a total wildcard that keeps the media focused on him for the next 60 days while the Democratic nomination plays out?

I think Trump will be Trump, the showbiz performer, and will go for someone that the media is not talking about, thereby getting another Billion dollars of free media coverage. The surprise pick could be a good surprise or a bad one, but both will be equally revealing of Trump the GOP nominee as opposed to Trump, the hater-in-chief. Here is my take on a total surprise that would be good:

Rand Paul: Mr. Paul shares Trump’s isolationist views on foreign policy. He also would provide intellectual underpinnings to Trump’s disjointed twitter rants. There may not be much bitterness between the two since the Donald did not take him seriously enough to link Ron Paul to Fidel Castro.

Condoleezza Rice: Trump is going to be looking anxiously for a strong woman VP candidate and he would get a double win with Condi who is also African-American. Given her past role as National Security Advisor to Pres. Bush, she would also bring “respectable” security credentials to the ticket. And what better way to poke the Bush family in the eye for not endorsing him than picking one of their own to run on his ticket.

Nikki Haley: I know she stated that she is not interested but then again she is a politician and could be enticed to change her mind. Trump gets both a governor, a minority (Indian ancestry), and a woman all rolled into one awesome candidate. The black vote is solidly behind Hillary but the brown vote (including Hispanics, Indians, and other shades between white and black) is up for grabs and perhaps Nikki could make the Donald competitive there.

Ivanka Trump: Given that the Donald has thrown out every rule in the book, why not just pick his daughter as his VP candidate? She is likeable, smart (we know this to be true because she went to Wharton like her dad), but most importantly, she is one of only a handful of women who truly love the Donald. This would not be some half-hearted endorsement like you can expect from Condi and Nikki—this would be genuine admiration for the man and that should count for something.

But as the Donald knows, every one is a loser and not worthy of being on his ticket. He may outdo himself by picking himself as his own VP candidate thereby bringing this circus to the ultimate theatrical climax. Let the games begin!
