TOKYO: A Japanese man certified as the oldest living man by the Guinness Book of World Records celebrated his 112th birthday.
Sakari Momoi, a resident of Saitama city, was born on Feb. 5, 1903, the year the Wright brothers succeeded in making their first powered flight. The supercentenarian is still in good health, according to the city.
Mr. Momoi, a former teacher, is originally from Fukushima prefecture and was 42 years old when World War II ended. He was 66 when Neil Armstrong walked on the moon, 86 when Japan’s Nikkei Stock Average hit a record high in 1989 and 108 at the time of the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011.
The oldest living person in the world, as certified by Guinness, is also Japanese. Misao Okawa, born on March 5, 1898, will turn 117 next month.
Another Japanese man, Jiroemon Kimura, reached the oldest age on record for a man. He was 116 when he passed away in June 2013.
