Nokia Launches Barbie-Themed Flip Phone and New Models in Latest Range
The Barbie craze shows no signs of slowing down, as HMD Global, known for Nokia phones, unveils an unexpected partnership with Mattel's iconic Barbie brand. This summer, HMD plans to launch a Barbie-themed flip phone alongside several other new phone models, including a smartphone branded under the HMD name. This collaboration comes hot on the heels of Barbie's recent blockbuster movie success, which grossed over $1 billion and garnered critical acclaim.
HMD is promising this "retro feature phone will flip the script on smartphone culture and will be this summer's hottest accessory". It could hit the right notes for those looking to ditch their smartphone addiction for a time or who want a fun accessory phone. Promising "style, nostalgia, and a much-needed digital detox", it will be a mid-tier feature phone rather than a high-end smartphone.
As of now, specific details are sparse, with only a release date and a teaser image provided. Anticipate a classic flip phone design adorned in Barbie's iconic pink hue, embellished with extra sparkle and glamour. Pricing and availability remain uncertain, with the summer 2024 launch as the only confirmed timeframe. Hopefully, the cost will be reasonable and accessible to all.
The Barbie phone and HMD smartphone will be accompanied by fresh Nokia-branded devices. HMD reaffirmed its dedication to the renowned mobile phone brand, emphasizing the success it has experienced under the revived Nokia name in recent times. This commitment is evident with the upcoming release of an iconic Nokia retro feature phone in the summer, following the pattern of previous remakes such as the popular 3310 model.
HMD hinted at another intriguing venture called "HMD Fusion." This project is envisioned as an open development platform, incorporating hardware connectors that facilitate accessories and modifications known as "smart outfits." This concept resembles Motorola's ambitious Mods accessories from the past. Positioned on the back are six pogo pins, enabling users to affix hardware "outfits" to tailor functionality according to their preferences. Additionally, an unlocked Android bootloader fosters software customization, enhancing the platform's adaptability.
That concluded HMD's presentation at the MWC. While there were no new unveilings, the company did share a teaser image featuring four phones. Among them, the pink one is presumably the Barbie flip phone, while the yellow one bears resemblance to the retro Nokia device. The remaining two phones are speculated to be the initial offerings of HMD-branded phones slated for release in the summer.
