Top Cultural Centres in Kerala that Mesmerize the Real Rich Culture

Kerala Kathakali Centre (Kochi)

With an objective to encourage and popularize the famous classical art of Kerala, Kerala Kathakali Centre was established in 1990. Dating its origin back to the 2nd century, Kathakali’s ancient characters are older than its literature. Kathakali emerged in 17th century when the ‘Rajah of Kottarakkara’ started writing plays based on Ramayana.

Apart from the classic Kathakali performance, the center also offers various art forms, such as Kathakali dance, music, makeup, classical Karnatic and Hindustani music, Bharathanatyam, Kuchipuddi, Mohiniyattam and more. Its performances are even telecasted on international TV channels such as BBC, National Geographic and the Discovery channel.

Punarjani Traditional Village (Munnar)

As the name suggests, it’s a pure traditional centre which showcases the well known arts forms of Kerala, namely Kathakali and Kalaripayyattu. At this phenomenal centre, every day the Kathakali show starts at 5PM and the Kalaraipayattu at 6PM. But, the centre can also arrange special shows at prior request. At 4pm, the visitors can witness the painting sessions of the Kathakali artists and at 5pm, the show starts with traditional music and dance.  The village offers seating at different prices with premium at 300 per person, balcony seat at 250 and executive at 200. After the session, guests are provided a photo-session with the performing artists. Right after the mesmerizing Kathakali session, Kalarippayattu starts with duration of 60 mins. The jaw-dropping Kalaraippayattu session will take you to a different world. Just like the Kathakali photo-session, Kalarippayattu also has one where performers pose with the weapons.
