Healthiest State for a Reason

Last week, NITI Aayog announced that Kerala still remains the healthiest state in the country. Divided into three, the healthcare facilities used in Kerala are allopathy (Western medicine), Ayurveda and Homeopathy. The Kerala’s private health sector, i.e. both indigenous and Western systems, plays a pivotal role in the system. Ayurveda which was used centuries ago is still in use heavily. The Panchkarma treatment with herbs, milk, medicated oils, massage and a special diet plan is world famous and people fly from across the globe to visit Kerala especially for the wellness tours. Places like Palakkad, Poovar, Kovalam and Kumarakom are the well known for these practices.

However, the recent floods raised many eyebrows, but the strong healthcare system of the state was capable to withstand the challenges the state faced. Earlier being accepted internationally, ‘Kerala Model for Development’ was referred to as example for the other countries to follow. The World Health Organization (WHO) now calls Kerala to focus on growth through progress in this current age of evolving globalization to level up the system throughout the country by being the right model.

A Tinge of Coconut Milk, Spices & Love

With its own distinctive style, Kerala mostly use the locally available ingredients in their dishes. Compared to other states in India, Kerala uses huge amount of coconut in virtually all their dishes as coconut is grown plenty because of the lengthy coastline it has. Spices such as green chillies, cumins, corianders, cloves, cinnamons, cardamoms, pepper, and dried red chilies are often used as Malayali (Kerala people) is very liberal in using the spices. Along with the spices, Keralites also add curry leaves and coriander leaves to bring in that extra flavour. Dishes like Puttu and Kadala, Appam and Egg Roast, Banana Chips, Pazham Pori, Kappa Kuzhachathu, Porotta and Beef are some of the lip smacking dishes that Kerala prepares which touches your heart when its served with love.
