India Gears up for Mercedes-Maybach S600 Guard on March 8th

BENGALURU: Setting a new baseline for civilian armored luxury vehicles, Mercedes-Benz is all set to launch Mercedes-Maybach S600 Guard in India on March 8th. A four-wheeled sophistication that can withstand machine gun fire, grenades and its boasts of a VR10 ballistic protection level, outwitting the previously Directive BRV 2009 rated VR9 vehicle. The vehicle is grouped under the S-Class category, according to zigwheels.com.

The Maybach can withstand constant fire of hardened steel bullets from assault rifles and probably packs more armor than a Panzer tank. Representatives of Mercedes say that they have used special steels and ‘other materials’ in the basic structure as well as the bodywork of the car. Armour plating is placed in layers especially at joints between two panels to enhance protection. The fixed windows are coated with splinter resistant polycarbonate to prevent shattering and the underbelly of the car features thick armor plating as well to withstand explosions. It is also expected to sport its own oxygen supply and can sever the outside air supply completely if required. Mercedes says that even the sides of the car can withstand grenades and IEDs. Ensuring the tires don’t come off in the event of a flat-tire, the monster boasts of Michelin tires that come with steel rings holding it in place.

While the fuel tank isn’t armored itself, it is coated with a special material that closes any holes automatically if it is hit. The powertrain will be the same 6.0-litre V12 from the S-guard which delivers 523PS of max power and 830Nm of peak torque. The suspension will be beefed up to cope with the sheer weight of the behemoth, which will be more than the S-guard with its hefty 4.5 ton structure. The car will be launched on the 8th of March 2016 and when launched will probably cost something in the vicinity of Rs 13.0 crores.
