Ted Turner made his mark as one of the most influential philanthropists in the U.S. and is a television and media magnate who founded CNN, the first 24-Hour cable news network. He purchased St. Phillips Island in 1979.

St Philips Island is one of many barrier islands off the Coast of Beaufort County. It is situated near St Helena Island, which is known for its historic Gullah culture.

Mel Gibson

Mel Gibson is a well-known film actor, director and producer, having starred in Braveheart, Hamlet, Maverick, and both the Mad Max and Lethal Weapon series. He purchased Mago Island in 2005.

Mago Island is a volcanic island that lies in the northwest sector of Fiji's northern Lau Group of islands. The island is of 5,400-acre, the size of some small countries and is one of the largest islands in the South Pacific.

As Gibson bought the island, environmentalists were concerned about the island and its nature stay being disturbed but the island was left as it is by the actor. Only one vacation home was built there by the actor.
