1957 Ferrari 335 S Ripples Paris Auction Market, Fetches 32 Mn Euros

This car also has a fantastic provenance and racing history. The 335 S Spider started its racing history at Sebring 12 Hours, driven by Peter Collins and Maurice Trintignant, finishing sixth. The manufacturer fielded all the four units in Mille Miglia, Italy in May the same year. This particular racer, chassis 0674, had Wolfgang von Trips behind the wheel and finished second. The 335 S has a unique yet unfortunate history associated with Mille Miglia. One of the 335 S driven by Spanish aristocrat Alfonso “Fon” de Portago crashed into the spectators, killing nine along with the driver himself. This brought an end to Mille Miglia.

The chassis 0674 also holds the pride of being drove in the coveted 24 Hours Le Mans, unfortunately retiring in the fifth hour due to mechanical problems. Successful runs for chassis 0674 include Swedish Grand Prix (fourth), Venezuela Grand Prix (second) and winning the Cuba Grand Prix in 1958. This particular car, chassis 0674 won Ferrari the World Constructors’ Title in 1957.

Upon returning from the unfortunate Mille Miglia, 0674’s engine displacement was boosted to 4.1 liters, producing 400 horsepower. This bigger displacement engine is capable of propelling the racer to a top speed of 300 kilometers per hour (186 mph).

The car went under the hammer at Artcurial motorcars. The new owner’s identity is not known, however Artcurial motorcars has revealed that the buyer is US-based. The car commands a special place especially in the hearts of UK enthusiasts’ as it was driven by most of the British greats during the 1950s. This recent auction reflects the burgeoning demand for Ferrari racers, particularly with the penchant for late 1950s and 1960s models, often considered to be the golden age of motor racing.
