Gurgaon-based Zomato has launched the District app for its going-out business. It is rolling out the app for both users of iPhone and Android devices, based on information available on the app stores.
The company is pushing to build the going-out segment as its third consumer vertical after food delivery and quick commerce.
In the month of August, the listed company had acquired the events and ticketing business of Paytm for Rs 2,048 crore to make an entry in that space.
About the District app
It allows its users to book tickets for movies as well as live events. Besides that, it has the company's offering for dining out.
District allows users to book tickets for movie exhibition companies like PVR-Inox and Cinepolis.
The company has earlier said that it will eventually shift all of its going-out businesses from the main app of Zomato, the Insider app, as well as Paytm's app to District. Ticketing services will, however, remain available on the Paytm's app till August next year.
At a Startup Awards 2024 event in October, Zomato's Founder and Chief Executive Deepinder Goyal said that the dining out offering, which the company currently positions on its main app will also be shifted to District app thereby leaving the main one for only the food delivery service.
Competition With Bookmyshow
With this, Zomato now has an app that can rival Reliance-backed Bookmyshow. Bookmyshow is going to face fierce competition from Zomato after the latter made its strides in the going-out business. Until August, according to Bernstein, Bookmyshow still held almost 75% of the movie-ticketing segment of the market, seconded by Paytm Insider.
Industry analysts said that Zomato will be able to use its existing customer base, and profits from food delivery to back some of its growth plans for District.
In October, Goyal had also mentioned that Zomato was present in three-and-a-half businesses- food delivery, Blinkit, and Hyperpure- and with the acquisition of Insider has forayed into a fourth, full business of going-out.
Zomato said its going out business has brought in revenue of Rs 154 crore in the July-September quarter, or more than three-fold up from the corresponding quarter of last year.
The company will raise capital of up to Rs 8,500 crore via qualified institutional placement.
