World's Riskiest Cities: Kolkata Comes 7th

6. Nagoya, Japan:

The third-largest incorporated city in Japan, Nagoya is another place highly at risk of flooding and tsunamis.

Around 2.4 million inhabitants of this city could be affected if tsunami strikes from the Pacific as the result of a storm surge or under-water earthquake.

Torrential rains as a result of storms will also leave large swathes of the city under water. Just a decade back, over 45,000 people was evacuated when the area suffered the heaviest rains in more than a century.

This city is also exposed to earthquakes, with 9.4 million people at risk of being affected by a large-scale tremor.

Because of Nagoya’s economic importance, the monetary toll would be massive if a serious natural disaster hit the city.

5. Jakarta, Indonesia:

Located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, Indonesia has to cope with the constant risk of volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, floods and tsunamis.

In the capital city, Jakarta, an estimated 40 percent of the city lies below sea level. As such, it is highly vulnerable to natural calamities like widespread flooding and is at risk of earthquakes.

In this mega-city, floods occur regularly mainly due to weak water management system. In January 2013, major part of Jakarta was flooded, affecting more than 100,000 households and resulting in the loss of lives of over 20 people.

According to the World Bank publication, earthquakes will likely sweep off poorly drained soil, causing the ground to lose its structural integrity. On top of this, Jakarta has become one of the most exposed cities on the planet.
