Bangalore: It has been stated over and over again that it's not Indians who lack skills of innovation rather it's our system that doesn't support such ideas. The bright minds are often road blocked at the initial stages of visualizing their dream projects on many factors such as inefficient initial funding, ignorance from the government and civil society, unfavorable environment for entrepreneurship etc. According to a recent study prepared jointly by Confederation of Indian Industry and global business school INSEAD, India was ranked 62nd in Global Innovation Index. We are at a crucial junction of time where India is rapidly making its presence felt on the world stage for its economic significance and abundance of skilled workforce that we need to figure out why we stand low in innovation and contemplate on measures to ensure our innovative ideas do not go in vein.
1. Wrong sense of entrepreneurship
The age old sense of "must work for government" mentality is still very much planted in the Indian minds, a wrong fruit of the British colonization that forcefully make the "servant mentality". Business is still an ugly word for many in India while the Silicon Valley kids are groomed to be entrepreneurs. We need to focus on entrepreneurship and how both entrepreneurship and innovation can go hand in hand. We need to come out of that outsourcing rut and make innovation an important part of this fundamental shift.
