V. Ramasubramanian Appointed Chairperson of NHRC
In a significant development, former Supreme Court judge V. Ramasubramanian has been appointed as the new chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), as announced by the rights panel. This appointment comes after the position remained vacant since Justice (retd) Arun Kumar Mishra completed his tenure on June 1, 2024.
Justice Mishra, who served as the eighth chairperson of the NHRC, was appointed to the role in June 2021. Following his departure, Vijaya Bharathi Sayani, a member of the NHRC, assumed the role of acting chairperson from June 2.
The decision to appoint Justice Ramasubramanian was made by a high-powered committee led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which convened on December 18. The NHRC chairperson is typically a former chief justice of India or a retired judge of the Supreme Court, appointed by the president based on the committee's recommendation.
Justice Ramasubramanian, who has a distinguished legal career, expressed his commitment to fulfilling the responsibilities expected of him in this new role. Alongside him, Shri Priyank Kanoongo and Dr. Justice Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi (Retd.) have been appointed as members of the NHRC. Kanoongo previously served as the chairperson of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR).
The NHRC officially announced the appointments on X, stating, "Hon'ble President of India appoints Shri Justice V. Ramasubramanian (Retd.) as the Chairperson, and Shri Priyank Kanoongo and Dr. Justice Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi (Retd.) as the Members of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India".
Justice Mishra's tenure marked a notable shift, as he was the first non-CJI to hold the NHRC chief post since the amendment of the Protection of Human Rights Act in 2019.
