UPA's Rural Job Guarantee Scheme Crumbling: Panel
Bangalore: The UPA government's landmark food security legislation which is aimed at providing cheaper food grains to 81 crore poor Indians is most likely to face the similar fate like that of flagship scheme Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). Although, the MGNREGA was a vote getter for the UPA in the 2009 poll, it fails to implement in the way it was promised since the officials and states are losing interest in its implementation, as reported by Iftikhar Gilani for DNA.
Since the year 2006-2007, not just the number of households who have completed 100 days of employment in a year decreasing, but the number of unspent funds has also increased in geometric proportions. A parliamentary panel, which probed the functioning of the MGNREGA found that the number of households completing 100 days of employment considerably decreased from 21,61286 in 2006-7 to 9,70930 in the year 2012-13. It was worst in 2011-12, as only 4, 05442 households could complete the entire 100 days.
