UP Rioters Used WhatsApp to Ignite Hatred, Finds Police

R K Vishwakarma, Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) said, "The video surfaced on August 29 and a day later we had blocked it on the Internet. However, it was passed on from phone to phone through WhatsApp and within a few days, thousands of people had viewed it. This only served to inflame sentiments. It was a ‘learning experience’ for the police,” reports IE.

The police have arrested many protesters across the district after four days of violence. "On questioning those arrested, we found that many of them had a clip of the video on their phones. They admitted that they received the file on WhatsApp and Bluetooth. They all believed that this was indeed the incident at Kawaal," IGP of Law and Order added.

According to the police, along with the video, the distribution of provocative pamphlets fanned the flames. "Pamphlets were distributed in several villages within a short span of time. These pamphlets told people to exact revenge for killings that have happened. Also, these pamphlets were distributed by both communities. There were also billboards and posters which told people to save their women and children," a senior police officer said.

As per the police, not only the video but also the distribution of provocative pamphlets and the inflammatory speeches made by senior community leaders and politicians have incited violence and further increase the intensity of the outbreak among the rioters.
