UoM to Host Science Conference In 2016

MYSURU: The University of Mysore will host the 103rd Indian Science Congress in January next year.

The five-day meet will commence on January 3 at the open-air theatre. This is the second time the university is hosting the meet. It had hosted it in 1982 earlier, and it was attended by then PM Indira Gandhi. The second edition comes in a year when UoM celebrates its centenary.

Nobel laureates and experts from across the country are expected to attend the convention. The event, besides making the centenary celebration memorable, also provides an opportunity to students to interact with subject experts. As part of the convention, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will present Eminent Scientist Awards on January 3. The meeting will bring together eminent scientists, research scholars to popularize science.

The sessions will cover a wide variety of topics like agriculture and forestry, veterinary science, earth science, environment, engineering, information and communication, computer science, mathematics, medicine, biology, physics and plant science and the like.

"Preparation for the Science Congress will start this month. We have appointed two local secretaries," UoM vice-chancellor K S Rangappa said on Thursday. To understand the nuances of hosting the event, a team led by the VC will attend the forthcoming Indian Science Congress to be conducted by Mumbai University.

"About 20 crore maybe required to conduct the event. The country is struggling to address diseases like cancer and Alzheimer's. Hence, we are thinking of having drug discovery as the theme. Top officials from prominent companies and industrialists will be invited to deliberate on the theme," said Rangappa, who is also a member of the executive council of the Indian Science Congress.

Rangappa will present a lecture on 'Chemical biology' during the Mumbai edition of Indian Science Congress to be held from January 3 to 8.

For over a year, UoM has been striving to get the executive council's nod to conduct the Indian Science Congress in Mysuru. Bharathiar University in Tamil Nadu, too, was in the race to host the 2016 meet.
