Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri announced a significant achievement in the ongoing petroleum refinery project in Barmer, Rajasthan, highlighting the installation of a major infrastructure component.
In a post on social media platform 'X', the minister shared that a massive dome roof of a Propylene Double Wall Tank had been successfully airlifted and placed at the Barmer site. The Propylene Double Wall Tank, designed to store hazardous and special chemicals up to 200°F, consists of an inner tank for storing the chemicals and an outer tank providing a protective barrier. The dome roof, with a total weight of 435 metric tons including the suspended deck and balancing weights, represents a substantial engineering feat.
"This is how India's energy sector is shaping up for the future under the dynamic leadership of PM @narendramodi Ji", Minister Puri stated, emphasizing the project's importance to India's energy landscape.
The Greenfield Refinery cum Petrochemical Complex at Barmer, Rajasthan, is being developed by HPCL Rajasthan Refinery Limited (HRRL), a joint venture between Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) and the Government of Rajasthan (GOR), with stakes of 74% and 26% respectively. Initially conceived in 2008 and approved in 2013, the project underwent reconfiguration and saw the commencement of work in 2018 under the Prime Minister's leadership.
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has outlined that the HRRL refinery complex will process 9 million metric tons per annum (MMTPA) of crude and produce over 2.4 million tons of petrochemicals annually, significantly reducing India's petrochemical import bills. The project is expected to serve as an anchor industry for an industrial hub in western Rajasthan and contribute to India's vision of achieving 450 MMTPA refining capacity by 2030.
Furthermore, the project aims to bring self-reliance to India by substituting imports of petrochemicals, which currently amount to Rs 95,000 crore. Post-commissioning, the complex is projected to reduce the import bill by Rs 26,000 crore.
The project has also provided substantial employment opportunities, engaging around 35,000 workers directly within the complex and approximately 100,000 workers indirectly. The successful installation of the Propylene Double Wall Tank dome roof marks a pivotal step in the progress of this landmark project.
