UNESCO Approved: Orchha for the Status of World Heritage Site

Indian Ambassador to Paris Vishal V Sharma submitted a file on Orchha to Lazare Eloundou Assomo, Director of UNESCO World Heritage Centre.

Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board's dossier gets a nod from UNESCO, listing the historic group of monuments in Orchha on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Orchha has been included in the list for the year 2027-28.

Indian Ambassador to Paris Vishal V Sharma submitted the dossier to Lazare Eloundou Assomo, Director of UNESCO World Heritage Centre. Official declaration by UNESCO will make Orchha the only state-protected World Heritage Site in India. Each year, the Central Government sends names to UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) for the nomination of one heritage of the country to the UNESCO World Heritage List.

At present, 14 state sites, like Gwalior Fort, Khuni Bhandara of Burhanpur, rock art sites of Chambal Valley, Bhojeshwar Mahadev Temple of Bhojpur, Gond monuments of Ramnagar in Mandla, the historical group of Dhamnar, group of monuments in Mandu, historical group of Orchha, Narmada along Bhedaghat-Lameta Ghat, Satpura Tiger Reserve, and Chanderi are tentatively included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Currently, the following places from this region have found places in the permanent list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the Khajuraho temple complex, Bhimbetka caves, and Sanchi Stupa. It boasts history and ancient architecture in large scale, mainly represented by the Orchha Fort, palaces, temples, and chhatris. Fort complex has a fine blend of Rajput and Mughal architectures surrounded by breathtaking scenery.
