TVS Group Stalwart H Lakshmanan Passes Away at 92
H Lakshmanan, a veteran of the TVS Group and former Executive Director of Sundaram-Clayton, passed away on Friday at the age of 92 due to age-related ailments. A pivotal figure in the growth of India's largest auto components group, Lakshmanan's career spanned nearly seven decades. He is survived by his wife, a son, and two daughters.
Starting his career at the age of 20, Lakshmanan worked closely with TVS Motor founder TS Srinivasan, gaining expertise in technical and legal contracts, as well as labor relations. Together, they laid the groundwork for the TVS Group's ascent as a leader in the automotive sector.
Following the untimely demise of TS Srinivasan, Lakshmanan played a critical role in guiding a young Venu Srinivasan, now Chairman Emeritus of TVS Motor, through turbulent times. "He was my rock of Gibraltar", Venu Srinivasan remarked. "His dedication, wisdom, and tireless efforts have shaped TVS into what it is today".
.Lakshmanan’s strategic acumen was instrumental in transforming TVS Motor from a moped manufacturer into a global two-wheeler powerhouse. Simultaneously, he played a vital role in building Sundaram Clayton into a leading entity in the industry.
Renowned for his negotiation skills and ability to foster relationships, Lakshmanan commanded respect across all levels from shop floor workers to government officials and bankers. His word was regarded as sacrosanct, underscoring his impeccable reputation for honesty and reliability.
Lakshmi Venu, Managing Director of Sundaram-Clayton Ltd, lauded his mentorship, stating, “He guided me with the same patience and enthusiasm he had shown my father. He had a remarkable ability to simplify complex challenges”.
Lakshmanan’s contributions extended beyond corporate achievements. He played a key role in preserving and passing on the TVS Group’s core values of trust, integrity, and service. Having worked across three generations of the TVS family, he embodied fairness, respect, and dignity in every interaction.
Sudarshan Venu, Managing Director of TVS Motor, noted, “To the younger generation, he imparted lessons in values that have endured since my grandfather's time. His absence leaves a void that can never be filled”.
Lakshmanan’s legacy also includes the turnaround of TVS Credit into a thriving non-banking financial company (NBFC) serving millions of customers.
