The political feud between former U.S. President Donald Trump and tech billionaire Elon Musk has reached a dramatic new high, with Trump issuing a stark deportation warning to his former advisor. Taking to Truth Social, Trump suggested that Musk might have to 'close up shop' and return to South Africa if federal subsidies were withdrawn.
“Elon may get more subsidy than any human being in history, by far, and without subsidies, Elon would probably have to close up shop and head back home to South Africa,” Trump wrote. He also criticized the electric vehicle (EV) mandate, calling it 'ridiculous' and inconsistent with his long-held campaign stance. 'Electric cars are fine, but not everyone should be forced to own one', he added.
Trump’s post further stated that ending government support for Musk's ventures would save the U.S. 'a FORTUNE', even suggesting the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) should investigate. “No more Rocket launches, Satellites, or Electric Car Production… BIG MONEY TO BE SAVED!!!” he posted.
The tensions began earlier in June when Musk openly criticized Trump’s massive budget legislation, dubbed the 'OneBigBeautifulBill', calling it a 'disgusting abomination'. Musk objected to its growing deficit and slashes to EV tax credits. Since then, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO has intensified his criticisms, recently describing the bill as 'utterly insane' and hinting at launching a third political party amid widespread public dissatisfaction with both Republicans and Democrats.
In retaliation, Trump, who once appointed Musk as the head of DOGE, threatened to cancel billions of dollars in federal contracts with Musk’s companies. Musk hit back by accusing Trump of ingratitude, claiming Trump would have lost the election without his backing. The Tesla chief even floated the idea of SpaceX pulling out of NASA contracts and hinted at Trump’s alleged ties to Jeffrey Epstein an accusation he later retracted.
What began as a high-profile partnership has now devolved into a volatile and very public power struggle, with implications for U.S. tech, politics, and beyond.
