Top SSC Exams That You Must Attempt

Government jobs have become the go-to option for fresh graduates and job seekers in 2020 due to the widespread layoffs and salary cuts across the board in private companies & global IT giants. Several exams are conducted by autonomous recruiting agencies such as the Staff Selection Commission (SSC), Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) etc to find qualified candidates for various positions & functions across departments/organizations in the Indian Government.

The nationwide SSC exams are hands down the most preferred gateway to a Government job. In this article, we will not just list down some of the top SSC exams you shouldn’t miss out on but also deep dive into each one of them.

The SSC CGL or the Staff Selection Commission Common Graduate Level recruitment is undoubtedly the most popular exam conducted by the Staff Selection Commission each year with over 10,000 vacancies and 25 lakh applicants. The SSC CGL is held each year to fill vacancies for ~34 job profiles across Groups A, B, C and D in the Government of India.

Typically the most number of vacancies are available for the Group D posts followed by the Group B posts. The salary offered varies based on the post you apply for and the group under which the post falls. The salary ranges from INR 29,200 to INR 1,51,000 per month. Anybody with an undergraduate degree from any recognized University/college can apply for this exam.

2. SSC CHSL

Staff Selection Commission Combined Higher Secondary Level more commonly referred to as the SSC CHSL is the preferred choice among aspirants who have only successfully completed higher secondary school or its equivalent. While the SSC CGL is held to recruit skilled candidates for mid and senior level posts, the SSC CHSL is organized to find talented candidates for slightly lower level posts across departments and organizations in the Indian Government.

There are four job profiles that one can apply for through the SSC CHSL - Court Clerk, DEO (Data Entry Operator), LDC (Lower Division Clerk) and Sorting/Postal Assistant. There are typically around 5,000 vacancies across posts in the SSC CHSL recruitment process and around 10-15 lakh candidates apply for the exam. Over 3,000 vacancies are usually available for the role of Postal Assistant (PA) and around 1,000 vacancies are available for the LDC or Lower Division Clerk position making them the most sought after job profiles.  The per month in-hand salary can be between INR 18,000 and INR 32,500 based on the job profile and the location in which they are posted after selection. Transport allowance, house rent allowance (HRA) and special allowances will also be offered.

SSC MTS or the SSC Multi-tasking Staff Non-technical recruitment is a nationwide recruitment process held each year to fill Group C non-gazetted/non-ministerial job vacancies across ministries, branches & departments in the Indian Government. Junior Gestetner Operator, Peon, Chowkidar and 4 other roles are on offer in the SSC MTS recruitment.  The take home salary can be as high as 20,200 depending on the job role and location. 4. SSC JE

The SSC Junior Engineer exam is held each year to fill Group B junior engineer positions in various departments and organizations. The most sought after of the roles on offer are the Civil Engineer, Mechanical Engineer and Electrical Engineer.  Quantity surveying and Contracts are the other two profiles available. Over 1500 total vacancies across posts/specializations are usually up for grabs. The basic eligibility criteria for the SSC JE is a relevant engineering degree. Unlike the SSC JE process, most other SSC recruitment processes just expect the candidates to have any valid undergraduate degree.
