These Journalists Went Beyond Capabilities to Uncover Reality



Marvel Cooke:

Marvel Cooke, an Afro-American journalist and an activist who worked for leading newspapers like New York Amsterdam News and The Daily Compass. In 1951 while she was employed by the The Daily Compass,  she exposed the brutal treatment of black slaves in the white homes. As part of revealing the truth, Cooke went undercover and was used as a slave, subsequently she wrote her experience to the respective newspaper and it was published with the title ‘The Bronx Slave Market.’

Frank Smith:

"Seven Days in the Madhouse!" is the quote that was cited by the Frank Smith in his article to the ‘Chicago Daily Times.’ Smith went undercover as a patient at the Kankakee State Hospital and in a span of a week, he exposed the ignorance of authorities in maintaining hygienic atmosphere in and around the hospital, which eventually resulted in shutting down of the institution in 1974.
