Tesla Inc. is bolstering its presence in India with the lease of a new office space near Mumbai’s Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC). The 30-seater office, located at Phoenix Market City in Kurla, a key commercial area near BKC, marks a significant step in Tesla’s strategy for the Indian market.
The office rental, booked via Tesla's Indian subsidiary, Tesla India Motor & Energy, is Rs 3 lakh a month and has been taken for a year, with a lock-in period of three months, allowing the company to maintain operational freedom.
The office will be undertaking early-stage functions such as regulatory coordination, vendor interactions, local recruitment, and backend operations before Tesla's scheduled EV launch in India. The move comes just months after Tesla registered a national record in the highest lease rentals for a showroom in BKC at Rs 881 per sq ft per month.
Tesla's entry into India had been postponed in past years as high import taxes and infrastructure barriers. But with Elon Musk's meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the latter's 2024 US visit, India has turned out to be a key market in Tesla's international expansion strategy. The launch of the new office ensures Tesla's resolve to setting up a larger presence in India as it inches closer to its expected EV launch.
