TCPL GES opens plant for Hydrogen-based MHCV Engines in Jamshedpur
TCPL Green Energy Solutions Private Limited (TCPL GES), a fully-owned subsidiary of Tata Cummins Private Limited (TCPL), a joint venture equally held by Tata Motors Limited and Cummins Inc. USA, has officially launched a cutting-edge manufacturing plant aimed at producing hydrogen-powered internal combustion engines for medium and heavy-duty commercial vehicles, along with other innovative low-to-zero emission technology solutions in India.
Spread across nearly seven acres in Jamshedpur, this facility boasts state-of-the-art technology and infrastructure. The inauguration of the plant occurred within a year of signing the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the State of Jharkhand, according to the company.
Girish Wagh, Executive Director of Tata Motors said “Tata Motors’ established legacy of nation-building, innovations, and industry firsts gains further momentum with the opening of this new-age manufacturing facility. The hydrogen-based powertrain aggregates and systems produced here will shape the future of mobility in India, making it smarter and greener. We remain committed to partner our customers to build a better tomorrow by enabling them to progressively adopt emission-free and commercially viable solutions for cargo and people mobility”.
Ashwath Ram, Managing Director, Cummins Group in India, said, “Cummins has always believed in bringing the right technology that powers the success of our customers at the right time. Our commitment to manufacturing advanced low to zero-emissions technology products that advance decarbonization isn't just a promise; it's a responsibility we embrace and is backed by concrete action. Powered by our global expertise, strategic partnership, and technological capabilities, we are making steady progress on our Destination Zero strategy".
Tata Motors and Cummins have maintained a robust 30-year partnership in India through their joint venture, Tata Cummins Private Limited (TCPL). In March 2023, TCPL GES, a subsidiary of TCPL, was established with the objective of collaborating on the design and development of propulsion technology solutions for commercial vehicles with low and zero emissions in India. These innovative technologies and solutions are intended for deployment across various applications and are expected to play a crucial role in the advancement of sustainable powertrain solutions. The company emphasized in a media release that these efforts aim to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, enhance air quality, and support India's aspirations for achieving net-zero emissions.
Aligned with Planet 2050, a forward-looking business strategy focusing on environmental considerations such as climate change, natural resource management, and community enhancement, Cummins demonstrates its commitment to sustainability not just through its product development but also in the operations of its manufacturing facilities. Throughout the construction of the new facility, emphasis was placed on sustainable practices, including the utilization of eco-friendly materials, implementation of energy-efficient systems, and adoption of waste reduction measures, as highlighted in the release.
