Tata's Dholera Plant to Launch India's first Semiconductor Chip by 2026
The inaugural semiconductor chip from Tata Group's facility in Dholera, India, is anticipated to be released by 2026. According to an interview with Frank Huang, the chairman of Taiwan's Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation, Dholera's debut chips are expected to be 28-nanometer, with the potential for scaling down to 22 nm later on.
The massive semiconductor fabrication facility in Dholera, valued at Rs 91,000 crore, operates as a collaboration between Tata Electronics and PSMC. This facility is designed to produce up to 50,000 wafers per month and will feature advanced factory automation technology utilizing data analytics and machine learning to optimize factory efficiency, aiming to achieve industry-leading performance.
In addition to producing high-performance computing chips, the facility will also manufacture power management chips catering to a wide range of sectors such as electric vehicles (EV), telecommunications, defense, automotive, consumer electronics, displays, and power electronics. These power management chips are tailored for high voltage and high current applications.
PSMC is well-known for its proficiency in the logic and memory foundry sectors, operating six semiconductor foundries in Taiwan. The Cabinet has granted approval for three semiconductor plant proposals, with two located in Gujarat and one in Assam, collectively estimated to cost Rs 1.26 lakh crore. "A typical semiconductor fab timeline for production is 3-4 years. But will try to compress it", IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had said.
Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt. Ltd's chip assembly and testing facility in Assam will be constructed with an investment totaling Rs 27,000 crore. Additionally, CG Power and Japan's Renesas will establish a semiconductor plant in Gujarat's Sanand, projected to cost approximately Rs 7,600 crore, with a capacity to produce 15 million chips per day. These developments complement the ongoing establishment of a chip assembly plant by US-based memory chip manufacturer Micron, with an investment of Rs 22,516 crore.
