Tata Power and DGPC Announce 600 MW Hydro Project in Bhutan

Tata Power and Druk Green Power Corporation Ltd (DGPC) have unveiled plans for a major hydropower initiative in Bhutan. The Khorlochhu Hydropower Project, estimated at Rs 6,900 crore, will have a capacity of 600 megawatts and will be constructed on the Kholongchhu river in eastern Bhutan.
The project aims to address Bhutan’s growing electricity needs while supporting India’s transition to renewable energy sources. Tata Power will hold a 40% equity stake in the venture through Khorlochhu Hydro Power Ltd, a Public Private Partnership (PPP) entity.
With a projected construction timeline of five years, the project has received all necessary statutory approvals to commence work. Praveer Sinha, CEO & MD of Tata Power, highlighted the initiative’s role in advancing a sustainable energy future and reinforcing Tata Power’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
Dasho Chhewang Rinzin, MD of DGPC, emphasized the significance of the partnership for Bhutan's energy security and economic progress. The project aligns with Bhutan’s goal of becoming a High-Income Gross National Happiness (GNH) Economy by 2034.
The collaboration underscores a shared commitment to advancing renewable energy and enhancing regional energy security.
