Tamil Nadu Govt Introduces Rs 2,000 Aid Scheme For Orphaned Kids
  • Tamil Nadu CM M.K. Stalin launched the ‘Anbu Karangal’ scheme to support orphaned and vulnerable children.
  • Eligible children will receive Rs 2,000 monthly aid till 18 years or completion of schooling.
  • In the first phase, 6,082 children benefit; laptops distributed to 1,340 Class 12 pass-outs for higher studies.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin initiated the 'Anbu Karangal' (Hands of Love) scheme- a welfare scheme to give monthly assistance to children who lost both parents or one, with the surviving parent being unable to take care of them.

These children will be given Rs 2,000 as a monthly assistance under the scheme until they finish schooling or are 18 years old. The program has been planned in a way so that the education of vulnerable children is not hindered because of the absence of parental care.

In the inaugural phase, 6,082 children from Tamil Nadu will be covered and the financial support will be given directly under the scheme. The government also distributed laptops among 1,340 students who had lost both parents, completed Class 12 education and secured admission to higher education institutions through state initiatives.

The officials added that the program came under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, which authorizes the state to take protective actions for orphaned and abandoned children. The rollout also included the introduction of a special mobile app created with the Tamil Nadu e-Governance Agency to make applications, grievance redressal, and monitoring of the scheme easier.

This is ahead of the assembly elections to be held in 2026. The ruling DMK has been carrying out a series of cash support programmes under its welfare agenda. Over a crore women are being provided with a monthly allowance of Rs 1,000 in the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai scheme, while government school students undertaking higher studies also receive similar monetary assistance to pursue their studies.
