Tamil Nadu Government Engages with Ford on Reopening Maraimalai Nagar Plant
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has held talks with Ford officials during his ongoing 17-day visit to the United States, focusing on the future of the automaker’s closed plant in Maraimalai Nagar near Chennai. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Stalin expressed optimism, stating, “Had a very engaging discussion with the team from Ford Motors! Explored the feasibility of renewing Ford’s three-decade partnership with Tamil Nadu, to again make in Tamil Nadu for the world”.
The talks are seen as a significant move towards reviving Ford’s presence in the state. Ford India had exited the Indian market in September 2021, citing intense competition and global economic challenges after investing nearly $2 billion in the country.
The Chennai plant is being considered as a potential base for both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric vehicle (EV) production, with Ford reportedly exploring a third re-entry into the Indian market. The plant may also serve as an export hub, with Ford possibly importing fully assembled cars (CBUs). Discussions follow the cancellation of a deal with the JSW Group in December.
The company recently filed for a design patent for its new Endeavour model, which had been a top-selling SUV in India.
