Sunjay Kapur, Chairman and Non-Executive Director of Sona BLW Precision Forgings Ltd (Sona Comstar), passed away following a sudden heart attack in London on Thursday night. He was 53.
The incident occurred while Kapur was playing polo in England. Sona Comstar, a leading auto components manufacturer, confirmed the news on Friday through a heartfelt post on social media platform X.
“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the untimely passing of Sunjay J Kapur… on June 12, 2025, at the age of 53”, the company said in a statement.
Calling him a 'visionary leader', the company highlighted Kapur’s instrumental role in transforming Sona Comstar into a global mobility technology enterprise rooted in innovation, sustainability, and purpose.
“His passion, foresight, and relentless commitment to excellence inspired everyone who had the privilege of working with him”, the statement added. “Beyond his professional accomplishments, Kapur was a devoted father, a mentor to many, and a tireless advocate for India's manufacturing and mobility sectors”.
Kapur had taken over the reins of Sona Comstar as Managing Director in 2015 after the demise of his father, Dr. Surinder Kapur, the company’s founder. He later assumed the position of Chairman and steered the company to prominence in the electric vehicle (EV) space, supplying critical parts like EV traction motors and starter motors.
News of his passing comes just hours after his final post on X, where he expressed condolences for victims of a tragic Air India crash in Ahmedabad.
Kapur was previously married to Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor, with whom he had two children, Samaira and Kiaan. The couple divorced in 2016. He later married Priya Sachdev, and the couple has a son, Azarias.
Sona Comstar stated that further details regarding memorial arrangements will be shared soon. His sudden demise has left a void in the automotive and mobility industry and is being deeply mourned by the Sona Parivar and beyond.
